Top Five hotspots for shopping
March
13th
Shopping may be in season or off season but in some places, shopping is great throughout the year. Some cities loved by shop-aholics are as follows:
- Portland, Oregon: The Rose city is attractive because of lack of sales tax and the Portland Big Deal promotion gig that is happening here. For Books (Powell’s City of Books), Chocolates (Cacao), out door equipment (Columbia sportswear) and art and craft (The Doug Fir) are all the best deals on offer.
- New York: A shopper’s paradise for gay travelers. High end boutiques to vibrant street markets and funky stores, NY has it all. Japanese bargain centre(Uniqlo), genuine kitsch (Love Saves The Day) and travel gear ( Flight 001)
- Los Angeles: LA offers great shopping districts, easy parking, and lots of stores from the kitschy to the sublime. For great Men and women’s clothing (Half Off Clothing Store), book worm’s paradise (Skylight books) especially gay themed books and Rose bowl Flea market, the mother of all LA flea markets is on every second Sunday each month.
- Anchorage, Alaska: No sales tax and some unique shopping opportunities such as Musk ox knit wear and other Alaskan native arts and crafts. Native arts and crafts (4th Avenue Market place and Alaska Native Arts Foundation Gallery) and musk ox knit wear (Oomingmak Musk Ox Producer’s Cooperative) are found here.
- St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands: It is a duty free delight. The central cluster of shops along Main Street is bracketed by two open air markets, Vendor’s plaza (for souvenir hunters) in the East and Market Square (serving locals) in the West. In between is duty free shopper’s paradise-for gold, jewels, electronics, china, crystal etc.
